The objectives of the study are to identify rhetorical functions in the Introduction Chapter ofFinal Report and to examine whether rhetorical functions utilized by the students of EnglishDepartment at Sriwijaya State Polytechnic have or have not fulfilled the rhetorical structure proposed inSwales‟ move model. The corpus was collected through purposive random sampling from a number offinal reports written by the students. The study used Swales‟ move model in analyzing the corpus. Theresults indicate that, despite similarities with Swales‟ move model, there are some differences betweenthe students‟ introductions and the model. It is assumed that the different features of the rhetoricalstructures are influenced by specific characteristics of the polytechnic final reports and their academicwriting capacity. Most of the introductions have not met the criteria or principles as suggested inSwales‟ move. This study shows that there is a need to teach the principles of scientific writing to thestudents and increase their awareness of rhetorical structure of academic genre. The study has shownthat Swales‟ model is useful framework in analyzing students‟ final report introductions, but otherstudies are necessary to compare and reveal their specific characteristics in different disciplines.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOS (EAP): A BRIDGE TO SUCCESSFUL STUDY IN A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY
Hambali, Muslih
language level of learners

EAP materials
This paper aims at discussing the role of EAP in preparing students planning to study oversea based on Indonesia context. The success of one’s study in a foreign university where English is as medium of instructions can be determined by how well his capability to use both spoken and written English. We might often find a students, though, in fact, smart in his discipline, get unsatisfactory result, or even fail in completing his studies because of English. Normally if one has good English performance during EAP program, he might have no trouble facing his future studies in English. Previous experience of conducting EAP program has proved how the program could contribute to the overseas studies of the EAP participants. Therefore, EAP program needs to be well prepared for the needs of academic purposes. The major concerns to address to the students is the study of English skills. Since the EAP program should begin with General English (GE) and then Academic English, the language level of learners, course length, target, and materials should be considered. If the average of baseline TOEFL score of students is above 450 as a reference for example, the number of hours for AE should be much bigger.

Teachers of English who conduct the process of language learning in English language teaching classroom need to aware about this situation. They need to know what method or approach to use to facilitate students gaining these competences. The combination of form and function-focussed teaching is another alternative to meet the competence of English language learners both in form and function. Focusing on students’ needs, the knowledge of form and function remains teacher to adapt or even combine the existed English Language Teaching method/approach.

This study aims at finding out English mastery of students of Engineering Faculty Sriwijaya University academic year 2010/2011. Research instrument was in the form of test given to 518 students. The result shows that the majority of students (79.52% or 412 students) still have a problem to get the minimum score of TOEFL-like test as required by Engineering Faculty Sriwijaya University. The students’ English mastery is relatively problematic if they just learn English based on the curriculum or if they do not learn English at all during their formal lectures. This problem can be overcome if the students learn English independently during their lectures. TOEFL-llike test scores required by Engineering Faculty Sriwijaya University still needs to be improved in order ro achieve the demand of Sriwijaya University as a world class university in the future.

IMPROVING LEARNERS’ READING SKILL THROUGH ADVERTISEMENT
-, Zulkifli -
Authentic
discourse
explicit
implicit
People do different things with their language and they expect to achieve a large number of different aims and purposes by talking and writing, and by listening and reading (Halliday & Hasan, 1989:16). In a reading classroom, teachers need to provide the learners reading exercises related to implicit message of the text. Thus, they would require more critical reading and thinking than just comprehension for factual questions. In this case, the use of authentic materials-that is materials, which are not specifically designed for pedagogical purposes- would be advisable to improve learner’s reading skills. The purpose of using authentic reading materials is to give learners the skill to cope with the think they might need to interpret in their real life reading. The authentic reading materials selected here are advertisement on billboards that are displayed in strategic places in the city. There are some steps teachers need to consider if they want to use advertisements as reading materials. First, they should introduce that the meaning of an advertisement is not something there, statically inside an advertisement, waiting to be “revealed” by a “correct” interpretation. Second, they should train the learners to get the implicit as well as an explicit meaning of the verbal texts in the advertisements. Concerning implicit (intended) meaning, train them to use the three features of contect situation. Thus using advertisement as reading materials would improve their learners’ language knowledge as well as reading skill the explicit and implicit meaning of a reading text.

THE OVERVIEW OF THE TECHNIQUES FOR TEACHING VOCABULARY
Sari, Evi Agustina
Technique
passage
vocabulary
Having good vocabulary will help the students to understand English passages. A more general way to help students develop vocabulary is by fostering a word consciousness, an awareness of and interest words. Therefore, instruction in vocabulary involves far more than looking up word in a dictionary and using the words in a sentence. The English teacher should apply some techniques in teaching vocabulary efficiently, successfully, interestingly, and enjoyably. To increase the students’ vocabulary may include choosing the words in the reading passage and discussing them with the aspects of pronunciation, word form, dictionary work, reading, and using the words in context in five meetings. Other technique is assigning each student a word to look up and present in the class based on “word profile” in one meeting. And the last is practicing vocabulary through games with the whole class, in pairs or teams and in groups. These techniques can be applied to suit the proficiency level of the students and different teaching environments.

TEACHING ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE BY INTRODUCING CULTURES AVAILABLE AROUND US

local cultures
The concept of English as an international language means English is treated as a global means of communication. This concept shows that English has a various dialects influence by the first language or it refers to the array of varieties of English spoken throughout the world. Therefore the focus of having a good model in English speaking countries, but we can look around and see cultures available around us and integrate them into English language teaching. May studies have highlighted that inserting culture particularly target language culture in EFL class is necessary because language is considered as carrier of culture. Moreover, integrating local culture is also interesting because local culture is hands on, available any time around us; it isliterally spoken, and accessible; therefore it is not time consuming, it is cheaper and easier to be implemented. Moreover, it advances cooperative learning which improves independency and prepares students to live in globalized world. Viewed from teaching materials, local cultures is rich for its diversity and helps students to develop their identity by thinking about their own culture and by learning about others. Through differences or similarities, they establish an understanding that each of them is different, and understanding that each of them has a culture which is interesting and beneficial to look at.

The study aims to identify students’ needs in learning English. Through questionnaires, the students’ needs could be elicited from 192 students, 37 graduate employees, 19 major subject teachers, and five English teachers of Business Administration (BA) department of Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya. The questionnaire data were analyzed using means, percentages, t-test, and ANOVA and triangulated with the interview results. Four main conclusions can be drawn. First, ESP materials for academic and professional purposes are demanded in English courses because the BA students use four English skills concurrently with English courses for personal and academic purposes and subsequently for future job purposes. Second, the teaching of general English is still needed because the students lack mastery of language aspects (grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, particularly technical words) and of reception and production strategies. Third, language skills and knowledge of language aspects and of reception and production strategies can be developed through the integration of a variety of in- and out-of-classroom activities. Fourth, the teaching of four language skills needs to be integrated in each semester; however, the teaching of general English, reading, and listening should be focused in lower semesters, whereas ESP, speaking, and writing should be emphasized in higher semesters.

TEACHING SUMMARIZATION STRATEGIES

academic writing
Summary writing is widely used as both a means for assessing student learning as well as a way to use other sources in academic writing. As writing teachers we know that our students have difficulty with summarizing information in an organized and accurate way. In their summaries our students focused on trivial information, or simply copied entire sentences from the source text and gave their own opinions and experiences in their summaries. Unskilled readers may need instruction and practice in summarizing paragraphs; other readers may need instruction and practice in summarizing larger chunks of information. They need an approach to sort information, and they need to see how skilled readers with sufficient background knowledge identify important information and summarize. The difficulty of the materials must be graded so that the students’ strategies and skills can be developed progressively Learning should start from single paragraph level summarizing and work up to section summarization and summarization of entire chapters. Finally, they can summarize from multiple sources. The teacher’s instructional materials and models of how to use an appropriate summarization strategy of various text lengths, content area and complexity will improve the ability of students to summarize. The students’ background knowledge is also important in making judgments about the important information in summarizing.

USING PALEMBANG’S TRADITIONAL FOODS AS ENGLISH TEACHING MATERIALS: A THEME-BASED LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION
Aryanti, Nurul
This paper is aimed at discussing the use of Palembang’s traditional foods as teaching material through a theme-based language instruction. This idea is based on the awareness of the writer to maintain and preserve their cultures, especially in terms of foods. The data are got by reading references related to the subject, interviews, and observations. The data shown that the Palembang’s indigenous foods can support Palembang as a cultural hub, because the great number of the foods are well-known and spread not only in local but also national scope. Teachers of English can participate in maintaining and preserving the foods by using the foods as teaching material. This can be done through theme-based language instruction. This approach is stressed on the real-life situation that are genuinely communicative and it tends to integrate the four language skills naturally.

The objectives of this study were aimed at describing the English proficiency of the non English major students at Sriwijaya University in the academic year of 2007/2008 and whether or not the English teaching has fulfilled the non English students’ needs in learning English as a foreign language. Further, to identify the reasons it the teaching of English at the non English major programs has not fulfilled the students’ needs. At first, the sample of this study was 390 students from 39 study programs out of 8 faculties. However, due to some technical problems, only 266 students of those 8 faculties participated in this study. Based on the results of the toefl test, it was found out that in general, the law faculty students got the highest average score (418.33) while the FKIP students got the lowest average score (372.64). The results of the questionnaire showed that most of the students felt that the teaching of English at their program had not fulfilled their needs (86%). This might be caused by some conditions. First, the methods used did not meet the students’ expectation in which the students preferred to have discussion and presentation rather than lecturing. Second, there were too many students in one class. Third, only 7.3% of the students stated that they did not have any difficulties in learning English. It means 92.7% of the students still got difficulties in learning English. In addition, 39.7% students consider listening as the most difficult subject and 9.5% choose speaking. Fourth, the time allocated for English was not enough—the students might need 2 or 3 semesters to learn English at university.

The fifth grade pupils at elementary school in Palembang had difficulties in learning vocabulary and pronunciation. These vocabulary and pronunciation learning problems made the writer interested in teaching vocabulary and pronunciation through chants and storytelling strategies to overcome pupils’ difficulty in learning vocabulary and pronunciation. The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not (a) there was a significant difference in vocabulary achievement and pronunciation ability of the pupils before and after they were taught through chants strategy?, (b) there was a significant difference in vocabulary achievement and pronunciation ability of the pupils before and after they were taught through storytelling strategy?, and (c) there was a significant difference in vocabulary achievement and pronunciation ability of the pupils who were taught through chants strategy as compared to those who were taught through storytelling strategy. The population was all the fifth grade pupils of SDN 2 Palembang. The samples were 60 pupils. This study was experimental. The data were analyzed by using t-tests (paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test). The findings showed that chants strategy could increase pupils’ vocabulary achievement (t=10.285, α<0.05) and improve their pronunciation ability (t=9.607, α<0.05) significantly. Storytelling strategy could also increase pupils’ vocabulary achievement (t=12.751, α<0.05) and improve their pronunciation ability (t=5.705, α<0.05) significantly. In addition, there was no significant difference in vocabulary achievement (t=1.725, α>0.05) and pronunciation ability (t=1.680, α>0.05) between the pupils who were taught through chants strategy and those who were taught through storytelling strategy.

OBSTACLES TEACHERS FACE IN INTEGRATING ICT INTO ELT IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN PALEMBANG
Kurniawan, Dedi -
Obstacles
integration
ICT
ELT
ICT proves to be beneficial to ELT. Thus, the integration is important but some obstacles are faced by teachers in the process. This is a descriptive study focusing on identifying obstacles in integrating ICT into ELT in teachers’ point of view. The subjects of this study, who completed a likert-like scale questionnaire investigating the obstacles, are fifty teachers from ten senior high schools in Palembang. The questionnaire investigates two levels of obstacles: (1) teacher-level obstacles and (2) school-level obstacles. The findings show that school-level obstacles, such as lack of professional development and training, lack of technical support, lack of incentives, lack of funding and lack of time, are more dominant factors as compared to teacher-level obstacles, such as lack of teacher competence and confidence, resistance to change and negative attitude. Some suggestions are offered based on the findings of this study.

ENGLISH SPEAKING PRACTICE IN PUBLIC PLACES: IS IT SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE OR AN ACT OF COCKINESS?
Moehamad, Ridhwan
socially acceptable
cockiness
mother tongue
foreign language
snobs
appropriateness of speech
As Indonesian people whose mother tongue is not English, we seldom use this foreign language for our daily communication. Its usage is confined within the walls of our classrooms in which this language may find its way to be recognized by the students. Under those circumstances, it is not surprising that English is rarely spoken on our streets or in any other public places. This kind of attitude, daring to use a foreign language in a place where all the other people do not use them, is sometimes met with unsympathetic glances or unfriendly stares. This may cause those energetic learners of English to think twice to use this language orally in public places. They are afraid of being mocked, ridiculed, or even considered snobs. This condition will lead to their losing courage to apply the theoritical English they have learned in their classes to the real contexts that may include those public places. This paper is, therefore, made to include a small research to investigate if this kind of discomfort and fear is unfounded. The research proves that most people do not object to hearing English spoken by other people of their own race or nationality on their streets or public places as long as these speakers can keep to normal level of loudness and appropriateness of speech and behavior.

Marshinta, Fransisca Ully
Tourism is usually synonymous with pleasure but this activity also has risks, especially during the COVID- 19 pandemic, so attention and improvement are needed on aspects related to tourism services such as infrastructure, security, safety and health (K3) and conservation of the tourism environment. The research method used is a normative research study that departs from the study of legal rules related to tourism legislation. Nature tourism is one of the tourist attractions in Indonesia today, which is visited by many people, even though in an atmosphere of COVID-19. Every tourist attraction destination is obliged to create cleanliness, health and safety in managing tourist attraction destinations during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially nature tourism that is in the open by following the Decree of the Minister of Health Number HK.01.07/Menkes/382/2020 concerning Protocol Public Health in Public Places and Facilities in the Context of Prevention and Control of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19). Meirani, Wasitoh
This paper aims at emphasizing the importance of a purpose statement in a scholarly study. This statement elevates the central idea in a study, and as such it is the most important statement in a research proposal or study. In writing a qualitative purposes statement, a researcher needs to identify a single central phenomenon and to pose a tentative definition for it. The researcher has to employ action words such as “discover,” “develop,” or “understand.” In the process, non-directional language is used, and the inquirer mentions the strategy of inquiry, the participants, and the research site for the study. In a quantitative purpose statement, the researcher mentions the theory being tested as well as the variables and their relationship or comparison. It is important to position the independent variable first and the dependent variable second. The researcher mentions the strategy of inquiry as well as the participant and the research site for the investigation. In some purpose statements, the researcher also defines the key variables used in the study. In a mixed method study, the type of strategy is mentioned as well as a rationale for the type of strategy, such as whether the data are collected concurrently or sequentially. Further, many elements of both good qualitative and quantitative purpose statements are included in the statement.

THE PRINCIPLES OF LANGUAGE TEACHING
Damayanti, Meli
Learning a language is learning to communicate through that language. Therefore, language teaching
is directed to improve communicative skills in various communication contexts. The abilities developed are the
ability to grasp meaning, role, interpret, assess, and express oneself through the use of language. All of them are
grouped into language skills, understanding, and use. To achieve these teaching goals, language teaching must
pay attention to the principles of language learning, and then implement these principles into various learning
activities. Language teaching requires settings related to software such as knowledge of the nature of language,
learning theory, and about the characteristics of people who will learn the language. In essence, teaching a
language, whether it is a first language, a second language, or a foreign language, is an activity that does not stand
alone, but requires the services of other relevant sciences. There are two theoretical foundations in the
development of language teaching, namely the theory of psychology (Psychology) and linguistics (Linguistics).
This paper will discuss the 12 principles of language teaching proposed by Brown. These principles relate to
cognitive, affective, and linguistic aspects.

The Practice of International Phonectic Alphabet among Students of the English Department of Sriwijaya Polytechnic: -
-, Moehamad Ridhwan
Herman
Abstract: This study was conducted for the purpose of investigating the students’ use of International Phonetic Alphabet in the English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. It is well known that English words are difficult to read and pronounce due to several factors. For instance, most of the words are not pronounced the way they are spelled. In other words, the letters in English alphabet are not always the exact representation of the sounds they are trying to symbolize in the written form. Therefore, the writers were in great intention of pointing out that there was a solution that would put an end to it called the International Phonetic alphabet. Besides, the writers were also curious about the students’ familiarity towards the English phonetic symbols. After the study was completed, it was found that the majority of the students were still unaware of the existence the International Phonetic Alphabet and thus, they were not in the practice of using it properly to improve their English pronunciation.

ABSTRACT: The spread of COVID-19 has caused widespread disruption of education, forcing schools to
seek urgent solutions to reconfigure traditional education programs for distance learning. The emergency
restrictions related to social distancing, gathering, etc., have generated a disruption, resulting in a massive
quick shift to distance and online teaching. The disruption of teaching has been highly critical and complex,
especially for developing countries due to the lack of technological infrastructure, low Internet access, low
level of preparation of teachers and parents to use technology, and lack of learning motivation. This paper
aimed at identifying the main teaching practices, challenges, and contextual characteristics that have
impacted the adoption and use of online teaching solutions during the COVID-19 outbreak. The paper
reached this goal by providing the results of a survey involving 25 English teachers taught at senior high
schools. The results revealed that despite a set of challenges faced, the online teaching experience during
the pandemic time brought improvements in computer teaching skills and communication with students by
using several applications for interactivity.

Issues on the Use of Grammar in Students' Final Report Writings in English Department of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic
Ridhwan, Moehamad
Risnawati
Sri Gustiani
Herman
This study was conducted for the purpose of analyzing the students’ final report writings in English Department of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya. It was trying to discover if the students were still making grammatical mistakes in their final writing project or if such a thing was already non-existent. When the mistakes had been found, the English grammatical points were referred to as to classify the kinds of mistakes that had occurred. Percentage was also made to indicate the most frequently found grammatical errors down to the least. From here it would seem that the students’ writings were only full of grammatical mistakes, but that was because this article focused on the mistakes. The correct structures being occupied remained unattended to, as it was not the theme of this article. Again, the results of this study could not be interpreted as the students having bad writing skills. It was just that their good structural points were not to be brought up for discussions as it was not the topic in this particular research. In addition, the writing papers being chosen were the ones that had been examined on the students’ report presentation seminar and been kept in the library of the English department which anyone could easily access. After the research was done, the findings were rather beyond expectation. The students made wrong use of even the simplest structure like past tense, to be, and plural forms of nouns. However, it was presumably and more likely due to them being careless and not because of their ignorance on the matter.
